Caring For Your Tarot Cards

Keeping Your Tarot Cards Sorted

I must admit that I’m a lover of all things tarot, and that includes tarot bags; especially those really unique ones that are created to match the tarot deck they hold.

One of my most favourite and well used decks is the Voyager Tarot by James Wanless, and when I first purchased the deck from him, I also ordered a handmade tarot bag that had the Queen of Wands card sewn into the vintage kimono fabric it was made with. I cannot tell you the pleasure I’ve had using that deck and the specialness of taking my cards in and out of that gorgeous bag over the past 20 years or so. It is definitely showing signs of age now, but like the thinning of the card and wearing away of gilt edging on a set of tarot cards, I think the years of service somehow add value and depth. But enough of that!

The real reason for this post is to share with you how to wrap your tarot cards in fabric. Ive been doing some tidying up around the house of late and came across a gift that I was given quite some years ago and it has been sitting in one of my drawers doing absolutely nothing. Every time I go through the drawer to tidy up, I see it, note that it is still unused, but so beautiful and a wonderful reminder of my friend that I’ve hung onto it. But no more! It is now a fully functional tarot card wrap, and here is how you can use a gorgeous hanky, fabric piece or art print to adorn your own special deck of tarot cards.

  1. Place your fabric piece out flat on the table

  2. Place your cards in the centre of the fabric

  3. Bring two diagonally opposite corners of the fabric together and fold them like you are doing the first part of tying up your shoelaces.

  4. Now bring the remaining corners of your fabric together and tie them in a knot.

Wallah! You now have a unique and beautiful fabric wrap for your tarot card deck!

Now if you are not interested in fabric wrapping your tarot cards, there are some lovely tarot bags around. I bought a gorgeous one on ebay recently from Second Life Magic, and I am really pleased with the quality, in fact Ive popped my Botticellli tarot deck in it.

Regardless of how you view your tarot cards, whether as art works, oracle, collectible or tools of the trade, do look after them. In the end it doesn’t really matter how you do it, wrapping, boxing or bagging them – it’s all about personal choice, budget and your own unique style. Most of all, ensure that you enjoy them!
